What Are You Going to Do?

For Those of Us Who, Simply, Do Not Know

What's your name? What brings you here to this article today? Perhaps, the title interested you! Or, maybe it was the cover picture that drew you in...

Whatever it may have been, "it" brought you here and now you're into the second sentence of this article wondering just exactly what "this" really is.

I'd love to tell you but, you see, I don't know. Just like in a lot of aspects of my newly obtained "adult" life, I am not certain what this could be. All I know is that I am 20 years of age and not where I thought I would be or, what I thought I would be at this stage in the game... but, since you're here... I can't help but think that maybe you're not too sure yourself either?

There is a lot of talk that surrounds us "Millennial's (realistically, if you were born in 1998, there is no way that you or I qualify as a Millennial but, for sake of understanding, thats what we will call ourselves). The adults that we look up to see us as immature and unrealistic, lazy and entitled. Is that really what we are?

I believe that most of the people from my generation are more than aware of the opportunities and possibilities that are at our finger tips. Nowadays, theres more than just settling down and having a family to look forward to and aspire after.

We want all of these wonderful things, we want to explore every option and walk through every open door because, we're supposed to be able to. But, there is a level of uncertainty that follows us through every door, a wave of doubt and/or a fear of failure. This weight can lead to some very overwhelming feelings that lead to some very discouraging feelings.

What are we supposed to do with all of this uncertainty? While I am not sure of the answer to this very unsettling question, I made a list of five things to do when you simply, do not know what to do.

1. Make an unordered list.

Making a list can be a very cathartic way of finding out what it is that YOU really want. Sometimes, when laying everything out it is easier to think about.

The best way to do this would be to make your list an unordered list, this way nothing you write down has significance over anything else that you write until you take a step back and evaluate/compare the list's overall contents.

2. Keep a journal.

Whether you like to Bullet Journal, Doodle Journal or, just traditionally write from day to day... Journaling is a great way to get in touch with your inner thoughts and feelings.

This is also another cathartic way to kind of sort through your thoughts and feelings. It will be important to be very honest and candid with your Journaling; you want to be able to get out whatever it may be that you have been holding back so that you may analyze and confront any inner conflicts you may be having.

3. Meditation (Creating a Stable Headspace)

When dealing with uncertainty, it can be very frustrating and thought consuming. Mediation can help clear the mind so that you are able to think clearly and make focused decision.

There are many apps in the App Store that offer guided Meditation, some of them even have different Meditation programs so that they are relevant to what you are currently feeling in the moment.

The most important part of Meditation is consistency. In order for anything to become clearer through Meditation you have to become in the habit of doing it.

4. Keep active.

Sports are commonly known to be great outlets for release of emotion. From football, to yoga, you can obtain release from any sport/activity.

Sometimes, engaging in a sport or activity can also help you to forget your struggles or worries for the time being. It also can help alleviate any crowded headspace that you may have allowing you to be able to think clearly.

5. Know that you're not alone.

There are people all around the world who are unsure, unsatisfied, and trying to work towards something they aren't even certain about. You are not alone, things will fall into place at one point or another.

I think that specifically for our generation, it is important to wholeheartedly understand that no one has a perfect life. No one has made it, because even if it looks like they have in your eyes, they may not even be doing what they believe they are truly meant for yet. Everyone has standards and goals that they want to reach but may not know how to do so just yet. You have to stay calm and keep believing

The key is to not compare and to keep your head up. Nobody knows what is going to be taking place in our own futures, we just have to be willing to be along for the ride.

I hope that by the end of this- even though you may not have found answers- you were able to find some tools to help you in your continued search for your answers in this life.

If you want, leave a tip!

That is one thing I know, I'd greatly appreciate :)
