Today You Are You

That is truer than true.

I am not sure who needs to read this today, but just stop. Stop comparing yourself to others, stop comparing yourself to who you used to be, and stop comparing yourself to those who are unoriginal. Basically, just be you, as you are an original.

I graduated from high school with a class quote of "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you" by Dr. Seuss. Pictured above is the decor that I received as a gift to never let me forget. At the time, not having a care in the world, this did not mean much. But now, as I look upon how my life has turned out, like most millennials, I have struggled to understand this quote in a world that is ever changing.

Today you are you, that is truer than true...

Let's dive into that.

In a society where Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other social platforms are prevalent, how can I not compare myself to others? How can I realize that I am original and true to myself?

For those that are always true to themselves, I want to know your secret. What did you have to go through to realize that just being who you are is more important than being like someone else?

We, as humans, deserve to be better to ourselves. We are so critical of each other and for what reason? We ALL can learn from each other, yet, we always see the bad before we see the good.

I consider myself a religious person, and personally, I still find myself judging others. Maybe it's my fashion/design background and how I always have the urge to critique spaces/outfits based upon current trends, but I cannot for the life of me get myself to be less critical.

Call it an instinct, but I think that there is such a thing as good judgement, and that is what I strive to use.

This doesn't mean I should be judging people or situations in a bad way, but in a more constructive way. The best advice I receive is always in a constructive way. This then opens my eyes, but it also makes me realize that the advice was given in order to better myself. Sometimes we lose sight of things and need to be reminded of the right path.

... There is no one alive that is youer than you.

Now, let's dig into that a little bit more.

You are one of a kind. Even if you don't think you are, you are. There is no one who has the same genetic material as you, same features, same interests, same preferences, same thoughts, or same beliefs. We all have a chance to be someone's one of a kind, but we cannot forget that we are our own one of a kind. We owe it to ourselves to put ourselves first when needed.

You are the only person who has experienced and seen every single second of your life through your eyes. You are the only one that can speak upon your experiences and that makes you youer than you.

With the "aesthetic of life" changing so frequently, we are changing into a society that focuses on being positive about individuals strengths and weaknesses. Everyone has the ability to bring something special to the table, they just have to dig deep and remember that they are one of a kind to find that certain something.

I did not realize it when I graduated, but Dr. Seuss is a creative genius that helped shape a world of humans that do not always know where they belong. A simple quote, that features two sentences, has changed people around the world.

Remember that you are not alone, and someone loves you. We all have different backgrounds, we all are unique, but we all can learn from each other and be kind to one another. In a time when suicide is so prevalent, we need to reach out and treat everyone as equals. Care for humanity, because God knows we need to in order to survive.

Hug someone today and tell them they're loved.

Tell someone you are glad they're a part of your life.

Reach out to those who seem distant and remind them that they are one of a kind, and the world is a better place with them in it.

As a reminder:

"Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you." - Dr. Seuss
