The Veil of Fear

Fear: Our Biggest Enemy

We all have enemies in our lives. Though these enemies can be large for some and small for others, there is one that hinders all too many of us. It takes us hostage in our brightest hours to keep us from achieving our hopes and dreams. It makes us hostage in our darkest moments to keep us from ever seeing anything better. It makes us hostages when it matters most, and even when it doesn’t matter at all. Do you know what the worst part is? It makes us hostages, and for some, we can never get away.

Our Story

Everyone has a story of their life that they will tell to an open ear, and naturally, it would begin at birth. No matter who you are, what ethnicity you represent, what culture you assimilate, and the parents who may or may not have raised you, humans are born with two innate fears: the fear of falling, and the fear of loud sounds.

As we grow older and we start developing our personalities, many other things develop along with it. Whether it be insecurities, toxic habits, deficiencies, or several other hindering factors, we come to find that one trumps them all in teenage and adult life. Fear, the core of so many problematic traits, is perhaps one of our worst enemies.

Not only is it our most common enemy, but it also grows in direct proportion with the depth of whatever we are afraid.

The Depth of Fear

If we are afraid of heights and adventure, we lose out on moments where that is the sole manifestation of that moment. We won’t be able to ride those rides at the fair, we won’t jump out of an airplane with a parachute strapped to our back, and climbing that rocky mountainside is an absolute no-go. Yes, this can be devastating as you can miss out on so many wondrous adventures, but it pales in comparison; it pales in comparison when fear sinks deeper into the heart and soul.

When we are afraid of love, we lose out on the greatest thing in life. The fear of love, or philophobia for you wordy folk, can take the brightest heart, and collapse it into a black hole.

We wonder why there are so many problems in this world. We wonder, yet we never realize it is because there is a lack of love in our hearts. The reason? The reason is that we fear so deeply.

For many, it’s not the fact that we fear to be on the receiving end, but rather we fear to put it into the world. We use the phrase “the world is a cold and harsh place,” so we can mute any reason to put our love into the arms of a stranger.

The fact is, the world isn’t a cold and harsh place. The world is a stunning and astonishing marvel that can revive even the most dead souls. The peaks of mountain wilderness, and the sharp causeways of the city jungle can all replenish the thirst for happiness and bliss.

The world is only a cold and harsh place because of fear. If everyone only feared loud noises and falling as an adult, the world would become the utopia everyone says is impossible.

Fear is what makes the world unjust and corrupt. It is a veil that clouds the light of day with piercing clarity.

So take your fears; take your biggest enemy, and fight it tooth and nail, because even Achilles had a heel. Just remember, no matter how big the mountain of despair and troubles in front of you may seem, it only seems bigger than you because it is forcing you to your back.
