The Truth About Your Worst Day
Finding the will to continue
Imagine your worst day. What was a time in your past when you didn't know you'd make it? Can you remember a day when you felt uncertain? Did you feel like you were all alone in the world? Thinking that no one else could possibly understand? I have a message for you my friend. This is a message that people told me years ago. Had I listened when I was young, things might have turned out different. But then this blog may not have even existed.
No matter how bad it gets in your life. No matter how ugly you think things are. No matter how awful you perceive your life to be, there will always be someone wishing they had your worst day. There will always be someone who has suffered loss in the world. Sometimes we win in life and sometimes we lose. We can complain, and we have every right to do so. But we should also know we have the right to choose. We can choose to say there's nothing that could be worse than this. We can decide to never deal with our pain. We can blame the whole world for our problems. We may never view our lives the same again.
Changing perspective
Living in California for a year has allowed me to see many things. On the outside, one might perceive I'm living the dream. If anyone wanted to be technical, they'd say I am homeless. I've had to live and sleep in my car. But even after renting rooms at different hostels, I knew that things could always be worse. One day I walked to a nearby bookstore in Skid Row. Seeing so many people on the street changed my perspective. There were people in tents laying out on the concrete. At least I had a shower to wash my body. At least I had a phone to call my family.
Gratitude has allowed me to view the unseen. It has boosted my mental health in the pursuit of my dream. I've had to make ends meet and figure things out on the fly. Still, someone wishes that they had my worst day. There have been days I had money and other days I did not. I have seen and chased rats. I've been swarmed by mosquitoes at night. I never lost hope that life would be better than this. I never gave up and thought things could not be worse.
"In tough times, everyone has to take their share of the pain." ~Theresa May
Worse in the mind
Perhaps you have been in places where your hopes ran very low. Can you recall times when you had to survive? Do you feel that you are lucky to be living today? There will always be one who has it worse. I've suffered shame, dealt with doubt and even death in my life. I've had breakdowns and cried out "Why!" to the sky. No matter how bad times were, I can look back on those days. I know that everything was worse in my mind.
Someone wishes that they had your worst day. Even the day when you thought you messed up. Someone would trade their life to be in your shoes. Even the times you thought enough was enough. Even the days you were lost and lacked direction. There is a soul who would switch places with you. It is how we respond to life when no one is watching. It is our character that can get us through.

The will to go on
I have been fortunate to see that there is reason to live. We can always find the will to go on. No matter how bad things get, the sun will come out again. Life ebbs and flows like the ocean. Nothing is permanent. There will be times you don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. You will think there is no way out of your situation.
This doesn't mean that times aren't bad or you're silly to suffer. We all have a unique lens through which we view our lives. I won’t pretend to know what you’re going through. I won’t pretend that life is not hard. But I won’t pretend that you cannot make it past this. I will always be rooting for you.
Be thankful in knowing that you are able to be. Our perspective determines what we are able to see. Strive to be kind and spread love no matter how you may feel. Your days may not be the worst, but your experience is real. Let your sad times be a spark to light the life of a friend. Let your bad times be a message of caution. Know that on your worst days, your journey doesn't have to end. It can be tough to go on for yourself. But you can try and be strong for someone else. When it is not about you, you can help.
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all." ~Dale Carnegie
