The Quest for Happiness

What Makes Us Happy?

What a question to ponder! And a big one at that! Or is it? How deep do we have to dig to find our answer? How much pressure are you under to find an answer?

An answer that’s personal to you and no one else. There are no right or wrong answers and no one’s judging. So, after all, it might not be too difficult to answer?!

For me happiness is a very simple thing and comes in a variety of guises through my children, husband and the environment.

It’s seeing my daughter laugh, throwing her head back and really laughing. You know the type? A laugh from deep inside your belly. The sort you can’t suppress, however hard you try. It might be that she’s been tickled or something silly has just happened, or maybe even watching a funny video clip. I love the joy that a child takes from the very smallest of things. They’re not materialistic - they just enjoy what they enjoy as simple as that! At the moment a tub of slime makes her world a very happy place. Who would know a lump of slippery, glittery gloop would make her heart skip a beat with excitement!

It’s knowing my teenage stepson is safe as he becomes an adult and finds his way in the world. We’ve done our best to give him the tools and the knowledge to make the right choices and I feel assured he’s becoming a well-rounded adult. It’s finding that moment in life when you both smile at something that resonates. Maybe reflecting on the past when he was a child and a happy memory or recalling a funny story. There’s a soft melting moment in your heart.

It’s seeing my husband’s relief when his football team wins! I can see the stress slip away when the full-time whistle is blown and he relaxes again, slightly smugly, but only until the build up of the next game. He loves his team so much, a love that has grown since a child and one that will never falter regardless of league cup wins or trophies. He’s dedicated and committed to his team. I love how animated and passionate he becomes about the manager and the team. It’s very simple he just wants them to do their very best; win or lose - obviously to win is the preferred option ;).

And for me personally, I feel my most content at the seaside. I can sit for hours and watch and get a real sense of peace and tranquility.

I love the colours of the sea. Whether it be the height of the summer and the beautiful turquoise of the water beneath the glistening sunshine. Or the wildness of winter and the roaring of the frothing waves on the pebbly shores. To me, I’m fascinated and happy by the sea, whatever the weather!

So happiness is very much a feeling...there’s no need to chase it, just ask yourself the question and look for some simple pleasures and cherish them. It might be having a coffee? Or meeting a friend? Or exploring the countryside. Whatever it is, relish in the moment and be present. Take note of how you feel. What is it that you see? How does it sound? Does it smell? Can you taste it? Take time to explore...

Once you recognise what makes you feel happy - make some more time for it in your life. It might not be daily, it might not even be weekly, but try your best to find those opportunities, embrace them with your heart and live your life.
