Recharge and Restart

When you stop posting or start posting s*** quality, people will notice. Take the break for yourself, and restart when you're ready.

Tackling any personal goals or projects excites anyone. For example, starting out my blog back in 2018. I was on my way to a new adventure, leaving my comfortable home of Calgary for the big city of Toronto to pursue a post-secondary education that I actually wanted and I discovered myself. This blog was for me to share my journey. Having this ongoing project, I would be able to watch my own growth in my writing, knowledge, and creative skills.

I was having a great start. I did have a few posts up, but as every other ambitious blogger, I had a fallout and I "ran out of things to blog about..." which is not entirely true, I just got doubtful.

I was overthinking my story ideas, comparing them to already successful fashion bloggers (as many upcoming bloggers do), thinking that it wouldn’t be up to par. But then I started posting whatever I came up with, for the sake of posting, and for the LIKES and FOLLOWING. That’s when I became miserable and lost motivation to continue this blog. When I realized that my mindset shifted to wanting the reassurance of the social media world, rather than creating something for myself, that’s when I knew I HAD to stop and take a break.

People watch you, having a social media platform of any kind—especially Instagram—allows anyone to see who you are and how you run your life. Followers who’ve been following since "day one" will be able to detect when you are falling apart and when your content is different, and I mean in a bad way. Surprisingly, your audience is able to tell if you are being truly authentic or faking out for attention. They can also sense when you are about to have a mental break down haha (these are the ones who say "I love you and want the best for you! You’re the not same as before! Put yourself first! Take a mental break!"). If you can’t seem to listen to yourself to take the break, listen to your audience! They are the ones who look up to you anyways, and if social media is your JOB… you really don’t want to lose their support, so listen and take the break!

It’s your decision how you want to take that break. For myself, I stopped posting on Instagram and I hid my app somewhere on my phone. From time to time, I try to find it and browse a little, but I just don’t post anything. I also erased everything I posted on my blog and began re-strategizing. I started thinking about what topics I really wanted to share my thoughts on in the fashion industry and how do I come up with my own voice. During my break I’ve just been researching, reading up on magazines, other bloggers, and watching YouTube influencers. Then I started coming up with a story idea as my "I’m back" post with a fashion forecast… but then I started getting frustrated again to figure out how to put it together blah blah blah… I stopped… and thought that this was a better reintroduction.

It’s not easy to step away from something you are so passionate about to take that mental break to re-strategize, but it is important. It’s also not any easier to restart because you feel like you’re back to zero. But just have determination, persistence, and a little bit of patience.
