In 2004 I wrote a story. This is what I wrote to express how I felt:
Once upon a time there was a land called Dribble. In this land, there were people
who had lots of faith. And they believed in sharing what they had with each other and
anyone else who entered their land.
One day a stranger named Ed was journeying from afar. And as he traveled, he
came across this strange but pleasant place.
This man was on a quest to find what he felt no one could ever give him, which
was understanding of whom he was, and his purpose in life. He was told that if he
searched hard, he would find his answers. So off he went battling anything that would
come against his goal.
Ed was traveling alone in his car. He went alone because years ago he was taking
a few friends with him and ended up going nowhere. Each time he was ready to start on
his journey, he faced situations with his friends that would prevent him from going. But
Ed was trying to be patient with his friends, so he waited longer. Soon he noticed that if
he wanted to go anywhere, he could not continue to wait on others to go with him. So
this time he decided to go by himself.
Now, as Ed was getting closer to the place he wanted to go, he entered the land of
Dribble. As he looked around, he saw the people, the beautiful houses, the well-kept
lawns, and the tall healthy trees by the breath-taking waterfalls. There were wild animals
there, yet they were free to roam in the streets. In this land, everything had a purpose.
everything had a reason for being. Everyone there soon knew why he or she was
there.
As beautiful as this place was, Ed looked up into the sky and saw a shocking
view. He saw a cloud passing by; a dark cloud that looked like a dirty puff of cotton in
the air. “Just what I need,” said Ed. “I am out here, and it seems I’d better get ready for
a storm coming my way.” He turned on his headlights and windshield wipers. Soon the
little cloud began to increase in size. As he was driving down the street, he noticed that
the people were walking around in the rain. No one had an umbrella. No one was
running for shelter. But the cloud was soon doubled in size. What was strange that
puzzled Ed was as the cloud grew larger, and the storm grew heavier, the people began to
smile more and more.
As Ed began driving down a side road, his car stopped running. He did not
understand why. His car was not empty of gas, but it would not go an inch further. So
Ed said, “I’ll have to sit in the car until the storm has passed over.” Just then, to his
amazement, he noticed that each rain drop that his windshield wiper brushed off his
window came back up to the window, as if to have a mind of its own. Water was all over
each side of the car beating on the windows, beating on the roof, and beating on the
doors. Rhythms began to flood Ed’s mind as he listened. Soon these thumps and bumps
were beginning to sound pleasant to him. Very soon, he began to relax. “What in the
world is happening?” he asked. Out of the air, he heard a voice that said to come outside
of the car, and not to be afraid.
Although reluctant to do so, Ed found himself unlocking his doors and stepping
out into the wet waters coming down from the sky. As he stood up beside the car, he
dropped his umbrella to the ground. He looked up into the summer’s heat and allowed
the rain to drop onto his face. Soon, he too began to smile. “This feeling that I feel,” he
said. “ This lovely feeling that I now feel is unspeakable, unexplainable.” So he stood
there like a flower, and like the grass allowing the rain to pour down upon him in the land
of Dribble.
Soon the storm had passed over, the sun came back out, and the air was very
fresh. Ed, for some reason, felt very refreshed and ready to go on with his journey. But
now he had a different direction in mind. He was going back home.
What he did not know was that in the land of Dribble, everything had its reason
for happening. Ed was searching for his purpose, and to understand why he was in
existence. So his car stopped in order to give the rain a chance to call him out to fall
upon him with blessings from above that he never new existed. Each raindrop gave him
courage, peace, wisdom, love, joy, contentment, and direction for his life. His eyes were
opened to whom he was. Ed found that he was a man that had to stop waiting on others
to validate whom and what he was. Just like the grass, the flowers, and the trees, each
does its own job. Each one has its own beauty. Each one is what it is, and has nothing to
prove, but is to be what it is. Ed found out that he did not have to look in another far off
land to discover himself. Everything that he really needed he could get. He just had to
step out in faith after his calling, just like when he was stranded in the car. Ed found that
if you seek, you will find. If you listen, you will hear. When you are called out, you can
only receive your fulfillment and blessings when you step out in faith.
Now on his way back home from this wonderful place, he understood why the
people of Dribble were smiling in the storm. Although most people would see the storm,
these people were seeing and receiving their blessings by faith.
