New Year's Resolution Goals

Ever since hashtags became "a thing" I've noticed that it's a good way to stay current with news, trends, and just about anything you want to find on social media websites. I used to think that they were irrelevant and pointless, but I've changed my mind over these past few years. They can be used for connecting with similar people, searching for information, or browsing food photos at 2 AM on Instagram. So, when I noticed the #NewYearNewMe hashtag across multiple social media websites, I started browsing.

People setting goals and resolutions for themselves for the new year isn't new. Along with the hashtag, I've also seen a lot of meme's poking fun at resolutions, like new people going to the gym. While there might be some people who aren't able to keep their goals, I also think it's more important to recognize that they're trying to improve their lives. I think the effort is more important than the end result. Sure, it's great if that new goal becomes a habit, but I don't think that it's a complete setback if plans fall through.

In these past few years, I've graduated with both a Bachelor's and Master's degree, gotten married, bought our first house, and had a son (who just turned two in December). These were great accomplishments for me personally, but along the way I lost my sense of identity.

What I mean by that is, I stopped doing some of the things I loved. This included writing, reading, and falling out of touch with friends. After becoming a mom, I spent most of my time focusing on my son. As a stay-at-home mom, I've assumed the role of homemaker (which I know most stay-at-home parents would agree that it can suck the energy right out of you). I love being able to spend so much time with my son and watch him grow up. Not everyone is able to have that, and I'm thankful for it. The issue of me losing "my identity" was solely my lack of effort. In short, I became "lazy."

Whenever I had free time, I would either sleep or play games on my cell phone. I fell into a routine of not really doing anything because I was tired. Even on the days my son would be with another family member, I told myself to just relax and sleep in because I don't get the chance often. My husband works 12 hour shifts and he is perpetually tired, but yet he still has the passion to pursue things that he enjoys doing. This year, he's decided to devote more time into his photography. Watching my husband inspired me to get myself in gear and start doing what I love.

I've decided to stop making excuses. Even if it's just 10 minutes a day. If I start somewhere, I know I can find my "old self" again. My #NewYearNewMe resolution is to pursue my love of writing and reading again. Many people have different reasons and goals that they're setting for themselves, but they all want to make their lives better in some way. I'm going into this year with a positive outlook. I hope we can inspire each other to be our best selves this year. 2019, here we go!
