Should I conform to the idea of setting a New Year's resolution?

Every year I will set myself a New Year's resolution because I felt that It would be nice to a set a new goal to achieve. However, learning over time, I realized that New Year's resolutions are never going to be measurable or attainable unless you have the motivation to achieve your goals.

It is good to set yourself goals for the new year but you might want to ask yourself this question.

Will I aim to stick to this goal I have set myself?

Don't get me wrong New Year's resolutions can be helpful for some people in terms of becoming a new person and starting afresh. Even Wikipedia defined New Year's resolution as:

Is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.

Okay, so we know that trying to improve and develop your life skills and accomplish new things. I do believe if you try something new you have not done before it can open your mind a bit. If you never try you will never know the outcome whether good or bad. As human beings, we might avoid failure and reach for success instead. However, the more you fail in your life the more you will learn and work towards your biggest achievement.

Even many famous people have failed numerous times before succeeding. However, thinking too hard about one New Year's resolution to become a better individual might not be the right way to go.

 Popular goals include resolutions to:

  1. Improve physical well-being: eat healthy food, lose weight, exercise more, eat better, drink less alcohol, quit smoking, stop biting nails, get rid of old bad habits.
  2. Improve mental well-being: think positive, laugh more often, enjoy life.
  3. Improve finances: get out of debt, save money, make small investments.
  4. Improve career: perform better at current job, get a better job, establish own business.
  5. Improve education: improve grades, get a better education, learn something new (such as a foreign language or music), study often, read more books, improve talents.
  6. Improve self: become more organized, reduce stress, be less grumpy, manage time, be more independent, perhaps watch less television, play fewer sitting-down video games.
  7. Take a trip.
  8. Volunteer to help others, practice life skills, use civic virtue, give to charity, volunteer to work part-time in a charity organization.
  9. Get along better with people, improve social skills, enhance social intelligence.
  10. Make new friends.
  11. Spend quality time with family members.
  12. Settle down, get engaged/get married, have kids.
  13. Pray more, be more spiritual.
  14. Be more involved in sports or different activities.
  15. Spend less time on social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr etc).

These common goals, thanks to Wikipedia again, can be helpful towards an individual's well-being which is important. But remember to do the best you can and praise yourself for every achievement, not just your New Year's resolutions.

So to answer the main question: Should I conform to the idea of setting a New Years resolution?

No, because every day should feel as if you are achieving something new. Every mistake or failure you have in your life is a way to learn and improve rather than give up. This is not just advice to anyone who may read this, but to myself as we all aim to strive for perfection. But we are not perfect, just works in progress.
