New Thoughts, New Things

The Thinking Makes It So

One morning I was washing dishes at my family's house. I noticed my uncle as he walked into the kitchen. He had gotten ready for the day ahead and wore a nice shirt with shoes to match. "Good morning," I said. "What are your plans today?" His response took me by complete surprise.

"I'm planning on heading back to the plantation to let the master whip me for about 8-9 hours and heading back home."

I thought to myself how it must be to view a job in this way. It is no wonder they would come back home feeling drained. As days would pass, I could also hear my aunt saying things like, "People should never be this tired. Why do I have to go to work?" Again I thought to myself, "Well why DO you have to go to work? Why DO you feel that tired?" I started thinking that if they had a bigger sense of purpose, and did what they love, they might not feel this way.

The more I would listen to the reasons why they thought they were stuck, my mind began to race for solutions. I began to picture them as helpless dogs in a cage. We can often feel trapped in our circumstances. We can think that, because we do not see it, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. We may not realize that light is never that far away. As long as we do not give up and allow our eyes to adjust to the darkness. Yet, will we ever find the light in our lives if we stop looking?

A while back I heard a quote that I will never forget. This quote has become a mantra for me. "I cannot get somewhere new without thinking something new." I love this. Many of us understand that our thoughts become things. From thoughts they become beliefs and actions. They soon begin to actualize in our reality. If we always think thoughts of poverty we can start to see poverty everywhere. If we instead think thoughts of wealth and prosperity we start to see that as well. When we hold on to the belief that there is a way out of our circumstances, our minds will search for solutions. But it is almost impossible to find a solution without the faith that one exists.

Sitting on a nail

There is a story of a man who always jogged through a neighborhood. Each day he would hear a dog barking in the distance on an old man's porch. When he would pass by the house, the dog would holler over and over again. One day he worked up the courage to go and talk to this old man sitting on the porch with his dog.

"Good sir, I couldn't help but notice that your dog keeps barking every time I run by here. It's always hollering, hooting, and howling. What is wrong with your dog?"

The old man said, "Oh, well it may be because he is sitting on a nail."

"Sitting on a nail? What do you mean?" the jogger asked.

"Well, that is his favorite spot. The dog has been sitting on this very spot on this porch for many years. So long that he's actually worked up a nail through the boards of the porch. Still he continues to sit there."

"Why doesn't he move?" the jogger asked. "Couldn't he go to a different spot?"

The old man on the porch said, "Well, I guess it doesn't hurt enough yet."

Until our circumstances hurt, we often don't make ourselves change. We will go through and endure pain to remain in our secure and comfortable situations. If ever you do not like where you are, I pray that you make a change before life makes the change for you. Realize that different thoughts will get you to where you need to go.

One of my good friends always tells me that you don't have to chase what you can attract. But half of the word attraction is ACTION! To attract what we want. We must take action. So think about that today. New thoughts. New things. Change your thoughts and things around you will start to change.

The world outside will always be a reflection of what's inside. If you continue to think the same thoughts, how will the world change? How will you see the change in the world? There may be opportunities lying in front of you. Right within reach. Will you choose to believe it when you see it?

I once heard that, when we're not getting where we want to be, we are often held back by one or two things. It is because we're doing too much of something or not doing enough of something else. We want to have money but we're doing too much spending and not enough saving. We want better time management skills, but spending our time watching TV.

Think about what you are doing too much of and what you could be doing more. This awareness will set you on the right track for change. Even if you are in a job right now that you hate. Think of how you can spend your day time working towards somewhere you want to go.
