Life. Why?

When did we become so materialistic?

Have you ever thought during your typical workday, or at home with your family, what is the meaning of all this? It's something I ponder frequently, and I'm certain I can't be the only one. As an eight year old, the loss of a close family friend really had me questioning the meaning of life. I recall driving down the road, seeing the hustle and bustle of everyone, and wondering why people would live the way we live, if at the end of it all, we are all buried in the same sized box and covered in six feet of dirt.

Every morning at 3:15, my alarm rings. What a drag it is everyday. Everything in my mind is screaming, hit the snooze button, give in to your sore muscles, aching joints, and get some sleep. Yet, every morning my feet hit the floor and, just like millions of other Americans, I get ready and start my day. I walk outside in the cool morning air and take in how peaceful it is in those early hours. This is really the only time throughout my hectic days that I will have that feeling of peace, and for those brief moments everything feels alright. Yet again, the reminder hits home that everybody else is sleeping peacefully in their beds, but some of us are not.

The truth to why we all suck it up and do what a lot of us don't want to do, is we are all chasing that dollar. We trade time for some worthless paper that they print more of everyday. Some of us have given up far more than sleep for money. Relationships, time with family and friends, time with our children, some of us have even missed weddings and funerals. Why sacrifice so much just to have things? The only answer that is clear, is we all have the desire to be comfortable, attractive, have things that make us more attractive, and for some to have things that most people will never have.

If we took away our egos, do you think we would give up as much as we do so we could have money? I don't think the answer is yes. Because, really, at the end of it all, it won't matter how rich or poor you were, you will be put in a box and put in the ground. As you are laying on your death bed, the thought of wishing you had worked more overtime to buy the latest and greatest phone, will not cross your mind. But what will weigh on your mind, is wishing you had spent more time with people that matter to you. Become less focused on what everyone else is doing, and don't envy what other people have. If we all did that, maybe everybody would aim their focus to what they really want in life, and focus on just being simply, happy. We are all special in our own ways. Swim against the current, and be true to who you are.
