“When we feel we have benched ourselves for too long, we must loosen up the unessential, get over our endless cringing and make a bold leap to the glowing stars of our dream.”― Erik Pevernagie

It was one of those hot days of summer. Clair was sitting on an old wooden bench beneath a large tree with dense branches. The sun was shining brightly directly over her head, and she could feel the sunlight filtering through the green leaves on her face. The park was full of people, children playing, adults chattering about things. She just sat there quietly, thinking about her misfortunes. But was this really a bit of mere bad luck or it was the consequences of her own action.

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped”—she remembers her mother saying this to her when she was 10 years old. Her mother was a great woman with a kind heart. She was fond of books and literature. She often used to tell Clair stories with important morals of life. Her saying has always helped her to overcome every difficult situation, but after her mother died 5 years ago in a car accident, Clair has always felt empty, that day the universe took away the closest person, best friend, and a great mentor from her. Though she never blamed the universe for it—after all, it was her own fault, at least that’s what she believed. If only she would have been silent that day. A small tear escaped her slate-blue eyes and soon they were clouded with water. But suddenly Clair felt something hit her legs. A low painful sound escaped her mouth. She immediately looked down to find a large football lying beside her legs.

“Excuse Me”—she heard a soft voice. Her eyes were still focused on the ball when she notices a pair of feet in front of her. Clair blinked repeatedly to hide her tears before looking up to find a man in his twenties, wearing a football jersey. Something in his attitude was intriguing. “I’m sorry”—he said in his dull voice. His dirty blonde hair was covering half of his forehead, narrowed eyes and lips pressed together tightly.

She stayed silent for a while then picked up the ball and threw it far away in the forest that is at the backside of the park. She saw the shocked look on his face as if he was thinking why she did that. But then the boy gave her a wide smile and said, “The world runs on Hope and I hope you have a good day, Ma'am!” Then he left in the direction she threw the ball, leaving her awestruck.

She left the park and started walking towards the bus stop, but his words didn’t leave her mind. He had used the word “Hope.” Even though it was just the one sentence, she was not able to stop thinking about it. She realized he had said the exact thing she needed to hear at that time, and it was true. The moment she was on the edge of losing hope from life, someone told her not to.

The thing that surprised her more was that he didn’t even know her and neither did she. How a stranger knew that she was losing hope—was she that readable or was it because she was crying, and he assumed it. Moreover, he said those things even after how unkind she was to him. This troubled her a lot, how could she take her anger towards herself out on some stranger who was nothing but kind to her. It was not something she would have done, but again she didn’t know who she really is anymore. Her mother has always taught her to be nice to people first. She used to say, “Once you have been mean to others, they won’t believe in nice anymore.” She still remembers her mother’s bright face when she used to teach her silly things of life which are of great importance. It seems to her that her mother taught her everything but forgot to teach how to live without her. Though it has been 5 years to that accident, she was still not able to move on from that.

Her mind repeats his words, “The world runs on Hope.” Can she move on from what happened and hope that it will all be better one day? But one thing she was sure of was neither Hope nor anything else can ever bring her mother back. She was gone for real and she must move on with a hope of a better Tomorrow. With this thought in mind, she took the bus, thanking the stranger, and went home to start tomorrow as a new beginning that is full of new found hope.
