The secret ingredient: Take it with a pinch of salt.

Grit. Pick out any of the related words to grit and they all follow a similar theme, or to be more specific, they point to a mentality: Never giving up. To survive or overcome adversity, we have to always fight and never give up, right? That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? I'm gonna be honest with you, it ain't easy being human. It ain't easy staying optimistic and overcoming adversity, but when you fight for that millimeter or inch, you're further than you were before and that in itself is not easy. I have and still am currently overcoming adversity—just like you, the reader and the rest of the community. This is an article of methods, advice, and motivation that will build that grit and help us pull through.

Who, What, and Why?

The first method that has helped me and continues to do so till this day is finding a reason to fight in the first place. Whether it's success through our academic life and trying to graduate, furthering your career after being let go from your last job, or even chasing that milestone in the gym that's been eluding you. Find that reason to fight for it. For some of us it could be the impact the end goal may have on our lives; for some it could be the impact it may have on others dear to us that are a part of our lives, too. Find that reason to fight for it, otherwise you'll be asking yourself why are you doing it.

If you don't know why you're doing it, that can leave you in a loop of doubt with a side of uncertainty, which can turn that progression into regression. From an inch or a mile forward, it'll turn into one step forward and 20 steps back. Whatever that reason may be, only you will find it and see it.

Me, Myself, and I

Whether you've seen it in movies and on TV, talking in the mirror with yourself sometimes is the hard hitting conversation that is needed. Now if you want to be that person to talk with themselves in the mirror every chance you get, do what you gotta do, don't let nobody stop you from it. But the main premise from this method that's being highlighted is ourselves, you, me, us. Self-motivation, just telling yourself, reassuring yourself, that no matter what's happening, you can fight through it. That's an ingredient in this recipe that's overlooked and underrated, but still essential—kinda like the the peppery flavour to fried chicken. It adds that body to the flavour and the only somebody that can get through to ourselves is us.

Bone Apple Tea

I know their are many references to ingredients and recipes, but all in all, this is meant to be food for thought. These methods have helped me through family losses, being kicked out of your own family home, and setbacks through university and work.

We are human, it ain't simple being human, but we can take life one step at a time. Progress can be however little or large you want it to be. Small increases are just as significant as large milestones in terms of progress, and grit can be the main quality that you can achieve, or the other. Just keep fighting, whatever the reason or whoever it is for, if you just keep fighting, we really will get stronger and overcome adversity.
