I Am Me

Smile and be yourself.

So what if I was just me. Pure and simple. No explanations just me. How would that be?

Ask yourself this question right now. How does it feel? Exciting? or nerve racking?

Why do many of us, struggle to allow ourselves to just be who we are. Why do we feel that we have to follow the labels society gives us. Why are so many of us longing to just be ourselves, yet feel divided as we find ourselves playing to a role that we feel we must live up to.

Now I am not going to blame the media here, as we all have choices, and it can be so easy to find blame with another, but I don't believe this to be true. I am responsible for me. I am the one who chooses whether to be true to myself or live up to expectations of others.

Upon analyzing this topic a little bit more, I realize that what stops many from just allowing themselves to be who they are, is the fear that they can't be versatile in who they are. They have to stick to being Type A or Type B, but cannot be Type A and B...that would just be too confusing for others to understand.

Many of us who struggle with just being who we are, are complex in nature. We don't fit into a particular category, but are A and B and even C at times. The fear is that this is too different from others expectations. So instead of embracing it, it becomes hidden.

I am one of those people. For years I kept the A, B and C of me hidden and just conformed to what others thought Rita was. It was way easier to be that girl. Actually it was way easier for everyone else, not for me. The real me, the girl I loved was put away from time to time and that became a habit for many years. It became a "way of life" and that's what happens. When you play that role for so many years, it becomes a habit.

How did I break that habit? By deciding enough was enough and honestly, putting my happiness above all else and welcoming the freedom that brings. Today, I am me, the lady I choose to be. There are some people, who don't like that very much. There are some people who judge me, think I should behave according to what they think is right or watch me from a far waiting for me to fall, but what do I think of this now? It doesn't bother me in the slightest. Its not a problem that concerns me as I'm just being me and I love it. The freedom in not conforming is too blissful to bow down to others expectations of me again. I love being A, B and C whenever I choose and love the fact that I can be so versatile in everything I do. That's what makes me, me!

If you are struggling with allowing yourself to just be yourself, I urge you to take that first step to opening that door. I did it through meditation, but you may find it through a talent that you have, or through reading a particular book or even this story might help. I want you to know that true freedom in life, true freedom right now is you being you. When you can live each day just being true to yourself, there is so much freedom in that.

Life opens up to you in so many ways. Life deserves the real you to step forth. Life deserves your inner light to shine through. Life deserves to really get to know you. Experience life to the fullest and don't be afraid to be just you.

It doesn't have to be complex. Maybe you are just an A or just a B, embrace that, value it and be the best A or B that you are with no apologies.

Life is short and if you can't be the real you today, when can you be?

So smile and stand up proud and say..."I am me!"
