You would be surprised how undervalued routine is. How much calm and happiness meditation can bring into your life. How much you will look forward to being yourself every one of 1,440 minutes of the day if you put momentary emotions aside.

At least I was!

In a series of articles, I want to share the little tricks that I use to make peace with my inner self every night when I go to bed and every morning when I get out of it. Sit back and soak in the tips that will help you live happier!

Lesson 1: There is no such thing as changing your life around.

I discovered recently the basic rule of meditation, being that everything that happens with us or around us we are bound to perceive neither as good or bad, but rather, as something that simply occurred. By taking a step back and putting on the mask of indifference, we can make considerable changes in our everyday lives. Though, none of this will happen overnight, and that is truly important to appreciate.

I remember the nights when I lied in my bed thinking of all the positive changes I will make the next day: “I promise to wake up at seven and go for a run. Then I’ll have healthy breakfast and read the news. Perfect! Oh, and I will finally have time to write this email. Oh, and to clean my room a bit. And then yes, I’m ready to go to work. Oh, and I can even prepare my lunch ahead to save some money. Perfect! Perfect!”... Let’s see what happens the next morning instead: I snooze the alarm until it’s too late for me to even have a coffee, I rush into work, I might squeeze in quick news briefing read on the tube, and again I find myself eating a greasy sandwich for lunch.

Relatable isn’t it?

So couple of weeks ago, I told myself to stop and make a change. I found myself fantasising about all the things I will do in the new year (making the resolutions that no one ever keeps), and I decided to put a stop to it. I keep telling myself that I should try learn a new thing every day, read the news, watch a good movie, read a good book and dozens of little things that I can never wrap my hands around. That night, I looked around me and I took the magazine that lied on my table for weeks, deep down in the pile of my To-Do's, waiting to be read. And guess what? I read the whole thing. And I made notes on the things that interested me. And I found things that were useful to my friends and I sent them references. And then, I felt like I deserved to go to bed in peace.

Sounds too easy? You’re right, it is.

There is not such thing as a radical change: life brings us a constant flow of events and emotions, which we are unable to erase and move on from. Instead, we can gently guide ourselves into better habits, and eventually, better lives.

The feeling of achievement, even something as small as reading the magazine, can bring you joy and motivation to keep going. Believe me or not, but since that evening, for constantly three weeks and four days, I have felt like a different person.

I wanted to change my mindset and I did. But I would like to save the discussion about attitude for the next articles.

For now, I hope you could follow my path and do something on your errands list that you postponed for ages or something that will make you feel like a fuller person. And when you do that, I beg you not to plan your great achievements for tomorrow. Go to bed and enjoy your sleep. Believe me, when you wake up, it will not be the same.
