Happiness Is Not a Choice...

Positivity is.

One morning I woke up and the sky seemed brighter. It was pouring down rain and for whatever reason it seemed like it was a sunny summer day. I woke up feeling refreshed like the mere six hours of sleep I got the night before was the perfect amount. My coffee tasted perfect on the first try. The radio played my favorite song as soon as I started down the road and that particular station seemed to play the best songs all day. It was a slightly warm rainy day, but not the icky humid kind of day where it’s hot and the air is thick. It was perfect with a slight breeze every so often. The trees were just starting to bloom. The grass was turning green and I marveled at every early spring bloom covered in rain. It was one of the best days I’d had in a while. A seemingly dreary, rainy day at that.

This was also the day I realized that every good day I’ve ever had was directly determined by me. Not the weather. Not nature. Not the radio. Me. I determine how my days go. My attitude determines how I perceive every single situation throughout the course of any given day. For a lot of people this is a hard pill to swallow. I understand everybody has bad days and that everybody has their own personal struggles and issues; But what a lot of people don’t understand is that your attitude can change a negative scenario into a not so bad or even positive scenario.

For example: you wake up on the exact same day I described above but instead the sound of your alarm sounds like nails on a chalkboard. You reluctantly get up and think to yourself, “I hate waking up. It’s raining outside and I shouldn’t even get out of bed today. I hate my job anyways.” Had you woken up to your alarm and not had negative “self talk” with yourself about how bad your day was *already* going to be, you could’ve instead thought, “Ugh, ok. Time to get up. I’m thankful to have a job to wake up for though. It’s raining, but I do LOVE the sound of rain!” and your day would feel a hell of a lot easier to deal with, and maybe even a little like magic like my aforementioned morning scenario.

I’m not here to tell you how to think, I’m here to merely shed light on the fact that we are in total control of our thoughts, feelings, good (and bad) days, etc. It may take a little brain retraining, but when you realize that a positive attitude can literally change your life, I think you’ll wanna give it a shot! It takes far less energy to see a brighter side of every situation than to complain or only see the negatives anyways.

Every single day has something beautiful to offer each of us. It might take a little searching or it could be as obvious as the big fluffy clouds in the sky, your flowers blooming with the spring, the perfectly painted sunset, or the rainbow after the storm— and what a beautiful thought process that is: to look up rather than down when it rains. You can’t have a rainbow without the rain. Remember that you’re here for a reason even if you don’t know what it may be yet. Embrace the mess and love yourself.

"I hope there are days when your coffee tastes like magic, your playlist makes you dance, strangers make you smile, & the night sky touches your soul. I hope there are days when you fall in love with being alive." - Brooke Hampton

Sending good vibes always ~
