Factors That Affect Motivation

Do your best!

In truth, there are many factors which affect motivation. You might be tired or hungry, which would demotivate you. You might feel the will of the divine sweep through you. You might have a fear of something horrible. Here are eight factors which affect your motivational levels.

  • Curiosity: I wanted to see if I could do it. That statement plays a huge role in our motivation. You wanted to see where the road would lead. You wanted to find out if you could make a spy camera. You had never painted a picture of a mountain before. All of these could be considered under curiosity because being motivated for the pursuit does not fulfill a primal or societal need. This motivation starts with ‘what if?’
  • Necessity: Necessity can derive from fear or have its source in morals or ethics. Something needed to be done, therefore you were motivated to do it. You might have seen the homeless man who was asking for food, so you brought food from your own pantry to him.
  • Calling: Sometimes, there is a feeling that we need to do something for a higher cause. We are embraced within the love of the spirit, and the motivation, which compels is irrefutable. There is a need to take action, which pursues a goal that goes beyond personal endeavors. These factors for motivation can be perceived as negative. The last, fear, can be either positive or negative.
  • Apathy: You don’t particularly care about X, Y or Z anymore, so you choose not to do it. The goals that you have defined to increase your motivation should be relevant to you. This especially happens in the workplace many people take jobs merely for the money. After a while of working at the company, the money starts to become less important for motivation.
  • Lack of Clearly Defined Goals: Goals are very important within the realm of motivation. If you have not set goals that are clearly defined, then a natural effect can be demotivation or outright inertia. This is usually something that can be corrected with research and many conversations about the subject. Learn what success looks like, visualize that success, and you will stand a much better chance of achieving your dreams than someone who has not.
  • Chemical Imbalance: Have you ever felt your motivation wane when your blood sugar is low? Do you find yourself getting irritable and depressed? Chemical imbalance is a real factor in motivation. If you are chemically imbalanced, take the steps that are necessary to correct them. Eat a piece of fruit if your attention is waning.
  • Higher Priorities: There are individuals who will place undue expectations upon you. They will wonder why you are not doing X, Y, or Z. The simple reason is that there is something else, what is more important. You might find mining for gold in your favorite MMO to be more important than getting a job. You might want to discover a new life on Mars rather than being a doctor. In the end, you will always do what you want.
  • Fear: Fear is a dual-edged sword, worthy of its own article. Fear can motivate you toward something else or decimate the motivation that you once had. When we are spurred on to creating goals, we are attempting to avoid the ‘big bad thing.’ That big bad thing can be ‘no house’ or ‘no job,’ or it can be something like the spouse leaving you. I am motivated to do my best work because if I don’t, I’ll have no job.

All of the factors for motivation are within you. You are in absolute control of your situation and your motivation at all times. The choices for action are endless. When you think about your motivation, know that the world is at your fingertips.
