Emotional Funks

How to Overcome Them

Emotional funks. We all get them. Which way do I go? What do I do? Why am I not moving? That's just the thing! Emotional funks are misunderstood. They're friends in disguise that remind us simply to DO SOMETHING. MOVE. They're opportunities to choose faith instead of fear. The presence of an emotional funk, existing for us to know that staying in that space isn’t what we want; they are reminders that we can choose to live in joy and hope.

They remind us to do something for someone or give someone a gift. Giving with a joyful heart always sends you into a higher place of joyful vibration. We are at our best when we're givers, and we release control over our own desires when we are focusing on improving the lives, or funks, of another.

They remind us to say thank you, for anything and everything. Thank you for my new nail polish. Thank you for my sweet pets, for the flowers on my porch, that I have groceries in my refrigerator and dishes in my cabinets. Thank you for companionship. Thank you for love. Thank you that the sun is shining today, or thank you that this rainy day put me in a relaxed, chilled place, because the good things that do exist in this moment don’t have to. We aren’t entitled to any of it, and regardless of what it is, even a mere breath is a gift, and without one, we wouldn’t be alive to feel the funks we feel anyway. Meditate on the good things, and more good things will come to you (Phil 4:6-8). The more you say thank you, the more you'll find you have, for which to say thank you. You know how they say if you smile, eventually you’ll feel happy? Keep saying thank you, and before long, you'll be so overwhelmed with gratitude that you just won't be able to stop!

They remind us to listen to music, exercise, and to dance. Do the things that feel good. Our bodies were created for movement, and our souls for celebration. You may not feel like getting started, but once you do, you won't regret it. Besides, we’re all just a bundle of energy, and that emotional funk? It’ll move right along it’s way once you put energy behind it. It’ll run its course, and be gone for a while. But you have to move.

They remind us to do that thing you've been dreading. Once you're on the other side of it, you'll find that it wasn't so bad after all. Let it off your chest. Don't allow anything to hold bondage on your soul. If something is holding you back, break it. Free yourself. Face it, deal with it, process it, do it, put it behind you. You can’t trick your mind into ignoring it, somehow those things linger until we cross them off of the mental queues of our mind.

They remind us to move forward in faith, knowing that everything is already taken care of. Everything has already been worked out for you. The only thing you have to do is choose joy, right now. We were given THIS very moment to live in joy. This one simple act of obedience is one of the most powerful.

Entertain the feeling of joy, and more joy will come to you. All you need to have this very moment is your next breath. So in summary, if you’re in a funk, feel it—acknowledge it, be grateful for what you have, move, help others, and think thoughts of joy. After all, a thought comes before a feeling. If you can change what you’re thinking, you can change what you’re feeling!
