Dr. Seuss' Eternal Messages

The Impact and Importance of Words like His

I just watched the latest Grinch adaptation, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Everything from the voice acting of Benedict Cumberbatch to the funny screaming goat was lovable. Honestly, I must say I enjoyed this one better than the others beforehand. The Grinch made me smile, giggle, and even (nearly) tear up. It reminded me of the importance of people like Seuss. Sixty-odd years after its original book release, it is still touching hearts, and hopefully, changing lives.

But The Grinch is only one of many remarkable stories left for us by Seuss.

Dr. Seuss was a children's writer, famous for many books and poems. If you don't know who he is, you've been living under a rock. Dr. Seuss had great words. The way he wrote so simply in a profound manner absolutely blows me away. What makes him such an important gift to our world is how relatable and transferable his messages are. No matter how old you are, you can take something away from Dr. Seuss.

Don't be afraid to try new things (Green Eggs and Ham).

"I do not like them Sam I Am!" Sure you don't. Have you tasted green eggs before? I see more and more how people judge other people, things, or places without meeting or trying them first. This can be because they have pre-conceived notions based on what they've heard, or are judging simply by looks. But opening up to new adventures is incredible. Sometimes deviating from your normal restaurant or route to work can introduce you to life-changing things. If you learn to have a more open mind, and you could find that you love green eggs and want to eat them everywhere.

Try on a new perspective—mainly a positive one (Cat in the Hat)

Before the cat showed up, poor old Dick and Sally were glum because it was a grey day and thought they had nothing to do. But once he started introducing new ways of having fun, the kids quickly realized there was nothing to be down about. This applies to lots of things! If you're feeling down or defeated, have a look on the bright side. There is a lesson to be learned in every failure, loss, or boredom. Think positive. Think different.

From Tee Public

Change starts with one person (common message).

In a great deal of his stories, Dr. Seuss allows that one special person to create change. I really love this quote from the Lorax because it's so necessary for children to understand from as young as possible. Without that one person vying for change in the world, the change isn't going to happen. Without the people fighting for what they believe in, we'd have a sad world. Seuss makes the small people feel huge, and that's what really needs to be taken away. Everything started from one person caring a whole lot.

Simple is effective.

There are no extra words or anything unnecessary in Seuss' writing. Yet he is able to get across such clear and concise messages. I think I could certainly take a lesson from the man. So could a lot of people. I'm currently reading Yvon Chouinard's book Let My People Go Surfing (great book by the way, highly recommend.) He is the founder of Patagonia, and Chouinard's design philosophy is to simplify as much as possible to get the best product, as opposed to adding fancy bells and whistles. Get your point across, get the job done, you don't need to over-complicate it. I love how Dr. Seuss takes words to the bare minimum and still makes it fun for all ages.

If you are looking for a cute pick-me-up on a rainy day, need a little pep talk, or want to bless the minds of the youngsters in your life, I couldn't stress the importance of Dr. Seuss. Also because he is so to the point, it makes it convenient to have a few second break to read.

Go do good things. Simplify the complicated. Cherish the gifts the world has given you. Read some Seuss.

P.S: I also love a great many other authors' works.
