Celebrate the Little Things

Be happy, you deserve it.

In the past few weeks, I have been having a lot of bad days and naturally, I just assume that’s the way it has to be and that there’s nothing I can do about it. All I can think about is the negative situations that have occurred lately, which makes me feel as if nothing will get better from there. I had been feeling like this day after day and it was really starting to get to me. All I could focus on was the negative moments in my daily life. However, then today I had a typical day of just hanging out with friends, playing card games, and eating good food. Nothing out of the ordinary. But at the end of the day, I felt extremely satisfied and happy. It was a breath of fresh air and it was able to bring a smile back to my face. It was such a small, simple day, but it helped lift my spirits more than I could ever have imagined.

Little moments of happiness like this happen every day. The more I think about it, the more I realize that they exist all around me. But even I can admit that it is very rare that I actually take the time to appreciate and celebrate these little moments. But why not? Why don’t we appreciate these happy moments as much as we should? There are so many times where I stop and take the time to worry about all the things that went wrong. I spend so much time thinking about all the low points throughout the day. I know that I’m not alone in that. Unfortunately, many people seem to think this way. But why can’t we have a similar mindset for happy moments? And not just happy moments specifically, but the moments that make us feel a little more confident and the moments that give us some motivation to keep trying. It might seem silly to celebrate the little things that go right throughout each and every day, but it can really help to improve a person’s mood completely, no matter how insignificant the event may seem to others.

Just take a few moments to think back on what you did today, or any day for that matter. Did you have fun with your friends? Did you complete an assignment successfully? Did you work hard at your job? Did you get to walk your dog in the beautiful weather? Did you get to do a hobby that you enjoy? Did you get to hear a song you love? Did you laugh? The list goes on and on. As long as something makes you happy, you should appreciate it. Celebrate it. Of course there will be tons of not so great moments in addition to these small successes, but they cannot be the only focus each day. It’s not worth it to let the less fortunate moments in life take away from these moments of joy.

Many times it can be very hard to ignore sad thoughts or feelings in daily life. The reality is, those types of thoughts don’t need to go away entirely. However, it is important not to let them take away from the excitement you feel in all of the cheerful things around you. Don’t let negative sources distract you from finding true happiness. As you go about your day, pay attention to the small events or situations you go through that make you smile a little more. Think about the great feelings they give you and savor those moments. Celebrate it. Because there are so many little things in life to be happy about and sometimes, we just need to take the time to truly appreciate it.
