Balancing Hustle & Play

You do not always have to hustle to live life to the fullest.

In a world full of fast-paced technology and the instant glorification of being constantly on the go, it is counter cultural when we actually implement balance over constant hustle. It not only leaves us anxious to always find something to do, but also leaves us empty when we find ourselves falling short at the end of the day. We are now to overwork ourselves to keep up with the pressures of meeting deadlines that we have created and that culture has pushed us to fulfill. Constant hustling is glorified, but do we ever stop to think about what it does to our beings—physical body, soul, and spirit?

When we constantly put demands on ourselves to fulfill a certain quota or even to please others by how much we will accomplish, we allow ourselves to be overworked, and even if it does not show right away, it always has consequences down the line. Eventually, if we do not create a self-care routine of slowing down, we will burn out and then hustling will no longer be an option.

Life has a funny way of telling you when to stop hustling and actually start resting, even if just for a season. What I have found helpful is actually creating and implementing schedules and routines for myself so I do not push myself past my limits. Even in this season of my life, while I find more rest and self-care than I do hustle, I still find time to enjoy the things that I once did, all the while maintaining a good work ethic. It can be done, but you have to allow yourself the permission to let go of the need for constant movement in this fast-paced world. It was not easy finding my balance and if I am honest with you, I dealt with some heavy health issues because of not learning the balancing act of slowing down and resting when I am told to do so many times. My question to you right now is this: Would you rather force yourself now to have balance in a creative way, or find out the hard way that you should have listened to your body when it told you to stop?

Many of us write off signals that life and our bodies are trying to throw at us, to warn us of danger ahead. I am with you because I did the same thing. We do not think it is that serious and we think if others hustle 24/7 then I should too. It is so easy in this kind of culture, but you have to think, is it very healthy to not rest?

I believe that there is beauty and taking weekly Sabbaths and even daily moments to really take care of and nourish you. Disconnect from the world, free yourself of work and distractions, and really rejuvenate yourself.

A few things that I find very peaceful during my self-care routine:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Going to the beach
  • Barre workouts or exercise in general
  • Taking time to enjoy nature and the creation
  • Praying and singing to Caribbean music
  • Quiet time where I do absolutely nothing
  • Dancing
  • Having fun by going on a vacation, amusement park or some kind of traveling

Find what works best for you; the options of learning to rest are limitless. After you have found what you love to do when resting, create a routine and stick to it. Remember during your self-care routine to include nourishment for your physical body, your soul, and your spirit. It is so incredibly important because there is only one unique you and you have to take care of the body you are given.

Until next time beloveds, enjoy this adventure!
