A Lesson From a Loved One
I have always been an overly positive person and despite what some people may think, I am proud of the way I am. However, due to recent circumstances, I have seen the world in an entirely different way, even more upbeat than before. Unfortunately, last week I lost my grandma, which was extremely hard for me and my entire family because of how close we all are. But through this experience, something my dad said about her really stood out to me. My grandma was one of the sweetest people I knew without a doubt. All of the stories everyone told about her had to do with her kindness, especially all of my dad’s stories. He told me that as much as my grandma disliked swearing, the worst word that could ever be said was the “h-word.” And that word is not the word you would naturally think, but instead it was the word “hate.” She never wanted to hear any of her children saying they hate other people, no matter the circumstances. It’s one thing to hate vegetables or push-ups, but once you use that word about another person, that’s not okay and it was something my grandma felt very strongly about. I like to think that’s part of the reason my family is so nice all of the time. Because it really is an important thing for people to understand and the mindset my grandma had is a mindset that I wish everyone would hold.

A Real Best Friend
A few days ago, I remember seeing all over social media that it was “best friends day.” There were endless posts of people talking about how much they loved their best friend and how they could not live without them. So many images of people hanging out together and having fun. And what did I post about? My dog, Mabel. She is my best friend without a doubt. I know that many people don’t understand it. They find it weird or sad for someone like me to be closer to a dog than to most humans. But I have never let those types of people get to me, because in my opinion, dogs can make much better friends than anyone else can.

Who You Are
A friend of mine recently asked me about how she should act on an upcoming date. Specifically, she wanted to know what to wear, what kind of food to order, and what to talk about. To me, this sounded like a ridiculous question because of course, my answer was for her to just be herself. I told her to wear whatever she wants, eat whatever she wants, and talk just like she would talk to anyone else. For me, it seemed like such an obvious answer, but so often people seem to ask me questions similar to this one, trying to be someone they’re not. And I feel like we all act that way every once in a while. We feel like we have to fit the norm or we assume people will like us better if we try to adopt a new personality.

Celebrate the Little Things
In the past few weeks, I have been having a lot of bad days and naturally, I just assume that’s the way it has to be and that there’s nothing I can do about it. All I can think about is the negative situations that have occurred lately, which makes me feel as if nothing will get better from there. I had been feeling like this day after day and it was really starting to get to me. All I could focus on was the negative moments in my daily life. However, then today I had a typical day of just hanging out with friends, playing card games, and eating good food. Nothing out of the ordinary. But at the end of the day, I felt extremely satisfied and happy. It was a breath of fresh air and it was able to bring a smile back to my face. It was such a small, simple day, but it helped lift my spirits more than I could ever have imagined.

Happiness Comes First
Happiness is an important part of life, but often times, we seem to forget about it entirely. We get so caught up in work, school, and relationships that we sometimes forget about our own wellbeing. Many people tend to complain about these aspects of their lives, rather than appreciating the good experiences they have. But if those things are really worth complaining about, then why waste your time complaining instead of actually going out and trying to make them better? Sure, things like jobs and friends are needed in our lives, but they should never cost us our happiness or make us feel miserable more often than not.

We Don't Deserve Dogs
All my life I had this fantasy living in my head that everyone deserves to own a dog. Dogs are sweet, loving, and without a doubt the most adorable creatures I have ever seen. So in my little kid brain, it puzzled me as to why anyone wouldn’t have a dog. I’ve had my own little dog for the past few years and I spend every second possible with her. I often wish that other people could feel that same happiness and companionship with pets of their own. So naturally, whenever anyone told me they wanted a dog, I would tell them that they should definitely get one.
