An Open Letter to Myself in Five Years

Written on Leap Year

Dear future me,

So far, you have graduated university and are on the brink of becoming a new person. It has been almost two years since you graduated and now you currently live with mom and dad. You have experienced many failed relationships, but now you feel comfortable with who and how you are as an entity.

You have realized that company and alone time are fundamentally important in a human's life. All company does not mean good company, and we have learned this in a rather strange and challenging way. In the past, we gave too much energy to people that didn't deserve it, nor appreciated it, nor did they feed any positive seeds in your life. We've come down the road of finally accepting that being alone and liking your own company is one of the essential things in life and will ultimately fill that void you've been hoping to fill in everyone else.

We have learned that secrets are dangerous and not for us to carry. They create distance between people and hurt only yourself. Carrying guilt can lead you to loneliness and a sense of not belonging.

We have learned that physicality is a beautiful thing and that you must take care of it by eating well, exercising, and most importantly, not clinging to it. We have finally understood that our soul borrows the body for the duration of a lifetime in which you'll experience what we can call human emotion. This separation between the two will lead you down a path to feed your soul and embrace what you were set out to do in the world. Pride will get in your way of trying new things, learning new things, and essentially becoming the difference you would wish to see in others.

We have understood that greed is a bad thing and will only lead us to a path of loneliness and misery; we have recognized that there is no such this as "ownership." We do not own things or humans or the world. We are here to fulfill a purpose, a life mission that is different to us all. We are here to help others and to build for future generations. We are here to create and to see through the things we begin.

We come to the world to meet, connect, and enjoy, but not to indulge in excess. Although we have had copious encounters of alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity, these things have only come to leave you feeling more alone after the night has passed. Excess in anything will derail you from your purpose and take more than it gives.

"Man only suffers because he takes seriously what the Gods made for fun." -Alan W. Watts

We are born with answers and get lost in the masses trying to find "what it is that makes us different."

Your new year's resolution of 2018 was to finish what you start. In the future, what you reap will sow.

Recently, we began planting the seeds. You have just started working on your e-commerce platform surrounding the idea of sustainability; you have started working on your writing in hopes of one day writing some great books and blogs. You have been acting for roughly a month and have let go of that ego that was restraining you from being all that you are to become.

I'm writing this letter to you, so hopefully the day you reread this, you will be able to be thankful for all that did and didn't work out. This ultimately makes you different and progress through life as you get older. Life isn't about always winning, but it is about continuously learning. If, in the future, we're facing a tough time, this letter is here to remind you that there is no such thing as giving up. It is never too late to start.
