“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”-Helen Keller

Wise words chosen by a very successful, yet challenged author. We all know Helen Keller’s story. A blind and deaf author who achieved inconceivable successes as both a writer and a person. If you have not had the privilege of reading about this phenomenal woman, you may do so right here.

When faced with adversity, it is hard to imagine anything positive that may come from it. Being told by a doctor that your life will never be the same again because of a disease, is probably one of the most difficult things to hear and deal with. Nonetheless, what you make out of it is entirely up to you. Healing begins with a choice. Regardless of whether or not you are religious, atheist, agnostic, or believe in aliens, one thing remains true for everyone. A positive mind accomplishes much more than a negative mindset in regards to everything. We have read story after story of how people in dire situations were able to do the unimaginable. Fathers lifting cars to rescue their children. Individuals being healed of cancer when the doctors declared them basically dead. Crippled athletes walking again. The list goes on and on. What is it that sets these particular people apart from others in the same situation?

Their mindset and the will to move on!

Let’s get scientific for just a second. It is proven that our brain has a system that actually activates our actions subconsciously in one direction or another. It is called the Reticular Activating System. This system is a network of neurons whose job it is to basically filter all the information that we take in, and separate them into “important” and “non-important” categories. We are in control of whether or not our brain allows or blocks certain information. In other words, we program this filter based on our past experiences and current actions. If you feel as though you are not important, you will go through your day finding pieces of evidence to support precisely that thought, because your RAS has been trained to do so. Maybe you were told as a child that you are stupid, worthless, sick, etc. Any of these negative affirmations, if believed, would trigger the RAS to hold on to that thinking, and continue the vicious circle of finding proof to confirm this thought throughout your day, and henceforth, your life.

I encourage you to watch this short video in regards to this matter.

One of the most important changes I had to make when I was diagnosed with RA was to make the decision to either give in to the disease, or fight it like hell (literally). I knew I couldn’t give up because there were four kids looking to me for support. What example would I set for their future if I were to simply admit defeat? No! There had to be a way to beat this, and I was making sure to figure out how. Controlling your mind is by far one of the most difficult things ever. But I am here to tell you that all it takes is practice. At a young age, I was told by my mother that I would never be worth anything, and though I made it a point to do away with that curse, I soon realized that subconsciously I held on to the words “I am not worth it.” As mentioned earlier it makes no difference what you believe as far as the supernatural goes, but even the bible mentions to be positive on several accounts. Example to prove that even the Bible lines up with what scientists are saying: “God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” (Romans 4:17). So no matter if you prefer the scientific explanation, or what God has spoken, the truth remains… Think, visualize, and speak positively to anything you want to change for the better.

When you get up in the morning let the first thoughts be positive, and if they are not, change them! “Today will be a great day, because I am going to be able to use my body in any way I wish. I am grateful that the pain I have been experiencing is subsiding, and day by day I am able to do more and more.”

Start speaking those type of words every day, and watch if things won’t turn for the better. Start being Grateful for everything you do have, and you are able to do, and before you know it you will find yourself doing things you have not been able to do in a long time. Positive Affirmations are a MUST if you want to see an improvement in regards to any sickness. Training my mind (RAS) to move forward in a positive direction, and expecting good things every day, has been the most liberating thing I have done in my life since separating from social media platforms. You can do it! Believe in yourself, and that you are worth it to live a healthy, long, and blessed life! You are in charge, and you make the decision to be better…Even today!
