A Guide to Finding Your Life Calling

How to know your role in the universe

The search for your purpose can feel like an eluding muse; close enough but so far away.

Sometimes in my own life I have felt this way, especially after life-changing events happened, like becoming a mother.

For you, it might be a career transition, relationship break-up, relocation, death in the family or becoming a parent.

Whatever it is the event can be jolting to our sense of purpose and identity.

I believe the universe supports us in our quest for purpose.

It's in the unknown that if we are keen to listening we will find the answers to what we are looking for.

And that which we resist does persist.

When it comes to finding your purpose, I think it's simple.

At least this is what I am practicing recently.

When the universe gives us clear signs, it is important to pay attention and act wisely.

If you are in the unknown right now in search of your purpose, you are not alone.

We all are in the same boat together.

The wild unknown is a strange place. It is mysterious. It is vague and confusing.

But yet there are so many lessons we learn in the wild unknown.

In the wild unknown, I think somehow we stumble upon the "calling."

Perhaps in our angst, fear, desperation, and desire the universe hears our cries.

When we call on the universe's help, I think through the power of synchronicity the universe shows us the answer.

It reveals to us in some mystical or non-mystical way - the calling.

The calling is what we must to do.

Not because it was necessarily there all along, but because we feel called to do it.

I remember in the book Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert she described a moment she had with G - d crying on her bathroom floor and the wisdom she received from praying.

It wasn't the answer she was looking for but it was the wisdom she needed at that moment.

In her words:

"True wisdom gives the only possible answer at any given moment, and that night, going back to bed was the only possible answer. Go back to bed, said this omniscient interior voice, because you don't need to know the final answer right now, at three o'clock in the morning on a Thursday in November. Go back to bed, because I love you.Go back to bed, because the only thing you need to do for now is get some rest and take good care of yourself until you do know the answer. Go back to bed so that, when the tempest comes, you'll be strong enough to deal with it. And the tempest is coming, dear one. Very soon. But not tonight."

I think that's how purpose works.

When we listen to the simple truths we receive whether it's on the bathroom floor or in a yoga class we get a little more clarity on what we need to do next.

We get a little closer to our relationship to ourselves and the universe, or G - d if you will.

We get more insight into our calling.

Ultimately it is the calling that will lead us to fulfilling our role in the great universe.

The calling is what you must do - not out of any other reason.

It is simple. And requires us to move one step at a time.

It is a wisdom you know deep within and there is no denying it.

When you don't honor that wisdom, you do a disservice to yourself and the universe.
