Rainy days can be annoying, but I kind of like them. They are essential for nature and make you appreciate the sunny days more. Sometimes it is nice to slow down, stay warm and cozy at home sipping your tea, and relax.

On the other hand, if you were planning a fun outdoor trip after a long week of hard work, and then it keeps raining cats and dogs the whole weekend, it can be a real buzzkill.

Don't worry! Rainy days don't have to be gloomy. All you need is a little bit of inspiration and you will make your weekend special even if it's pouring outside.

Here's a list of things you can do to stay entertained during a rainy season (which, if you are living in England, is practically every month), and even use this time to do something meaningful. I'm sure even more ideas will come to your mind after you read this.

Time to Do Something Old-School

Don't just sit around with your laptop checking social media. Here's your chance to go back to the basics and find some inner peace.

  • Write some letters
  • Call your grandma
  • Look at old photographs
  • Listen to the radio
  • Make a cup of tea and look dreamily out of the window
  • Write in your journal
  • Listen to some records

Time to Do Some Chores

You have a chance to catch up on your housework. All the things you didn't feel like doing when the weather was nice and you rather went out... now you have all the time you need to get everything done. Doing chores can be a form of meditation and it will give you a sense of accomplishment.

  • Organise your closets
  • Learn how to cook a new meal
  • Bake something
  • Learn how to DIY and fix something in your home
  • Put together unwanted things you can donate
  • Redecorate your room
  • Plant something

Time for Self-Care

You have time to slow down and relax. Treat yourself. You deserve it.
  • Take a bath
  • Do some yoga
  • Give yourself a new hairstyle
  • Try some make-up tutorials
  • Paint your nails
  • Make yourself a spa day at home
  • Learn how to do a new massage with your partner or roommate

Time for Music Lovers

  • Watch a live concert on YouTube
  • Write a song
  • Sing karaoke
  • Learn to play a new song on your favourite musical instrument
  • Practise the cup routine from the "cup song"
  • Browse on Spotify and discover some new music
  • Make a playlist

Time for Bookworms and Geeks

  • Snuggle up in bed with your favourite book
  • Write a poem about rain
  • Make a video
  • Start learning a new foreign language
  • Do some online quizzes
  • Write a short story
  • Do a movie marathon

Time to Wake Up the Artist in You

Now you have a great excuse to try all the things you secretly always wanted to try.

  • Paint a nice picture for your room
  • Doodle
  • Draw a portrait of your friend
  • Colour in your colouring book
  • Try origami
  • Make some crafts
  • Take some artsy photographs

Time for Some Childlike Fun

Wake up your inner child and you will have so much fun! Remember what you were doing as a child when it was raining outside. Why not do the same now?

  • Put together a jigsaw puzzle
  • Build something out of Legos
  • Play your favourite childhood game
  • Build a den/fort out of blankets
  • Try face painting
  • Play a board game
  • Invite your best friend for a sleepover

Time to Be With Friends

  • Prepare a fun game for game night
  • Throw a costume party
  • Invite your friends for afternoon tea
  • Play charades
  • Cook a nice dinner together
  • Make popcorn and watch a movie
  • Just hang out

If You Have to Spend Time on Your Computer...

Well, let's face it. You are going to be a lot on your laptop or smartphone, as always. But, why don't you try to do something more interesting and fulfilling than scrolling down through Facebook posts?

  • Skype with your friends
  • Answer all your e-mails
  • Make a fun PowerPoint presentation
  • Watch some YouTube tutorials
  • Go online shopping for birthday/Christmas presents
  • Watch some Ted Talks
  • Plan your holiday

If You Don't Want to Stay at Home All Day...

There's no reason you couldn't go outside as usual. After all, we are not made out of sugar and it won't make us melt if we get wet...

  • Go umbrella shopping
  • Hang out at a café with a book
  • Go to Ikea
  • Spend the day at a museum
  • Go to the library
  • Ride on a bus around town and watch the rainy world
  • Put your rubber boots on and go jumping in puddles
