As a voracious reader of books, I come across some great ones that continually change my outlook on life and my mood toward myself and the people around me. These are the types of books that I reread often and even reference in times of need. All six of the books you are about to be introduced to are in my own personal library collection (whether on a shelf in my office or in my Kindle collection).
If you’ve been looking to live a happier and more positive life, these six books will get you on the way.
The Lost Art Of Good Conversation by Sakyong Mipham
I can attest to the changes in the way we communicate. I was lucky enough to spend the first decade or so of my life growing up in a time where we didn’t have household computers. In fact, we didn’t have a computer in my high school until my junior year. I remember what it was like to spend time communicating with people in person or over the phone, instead of through a computer and through texting. I’m super grateful for the communication devices we have now, but I definitely see that there have been some negative changes in the way you treat people and speak to people since smartphones and Facebook became the norm.
What I love about this book, and what makes it a life-changer, is the fact that it takes a spiritual approach to opening the lines of communication back up in your life. As the subtitle suggests, it is "A Mindful Way To Connect With Others And Enrich Everyday Life." These mindful ways include:
- Practicing awareness
- Practicing reflection
- Being present
- Showing kindness
- Being mindful
- Finding common ground
- Expressing your feelings
If you’re ready to start embracing a happier life through better communication, this is the book for you. It’s easy to read and follow. The “reflection” tips at the end of each chapter will help you express yourself, be happier, and communicate effectively. They also make a quick and easy tool to look back on when you need a refresher. I received this book from Blogging For Books for this unbiased review.

The Tao Of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff
In Taoist tradition, Pooh is essentially the “Uncarved Block.” Through the tales of Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, Hoff explains how life can be much more relaxing if we follow in the footsteps of the calm and reflective bear Winnie the Pooh.
This book will teach you how to be more reflective of life and yourself. It teaches us how to slow down and enjoy life more. The pages of this book will truly have you looking at life differently and reevaluating what is important and what is just filler. I love that this book uses such a beloved character to help you live a better life.

The Te Of Piglet by Benjamin Hoff
Do you have virtue? What is a virtue, really? According to the dictionary, it is “behavior showing high moral standards.” By being virtuous you are kind to others, you don’t tell lies, and you live a life of morality. Through The Te Of Piglet, you’ll learn more about virtue through the story of the character Piglet.
Just like in The Tao Of Pooh, you will find yourself traipsing through the Hundred Acre Wood talking to all of your favorite childhood characters, from Tigger to Rabbit. And, while you read, you’ll learn that bigger isn’t always better.

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
I am currently in the midst of reading The Fifth Agreement, but I still find The Four Agreements to be the superior, must-read book with Don Miguel Ruiz’s name on it. This book is a life changer IF you follow the tips spelled out in the pages.
While The Four Agreements are simple, they can be difficult to follow and it takes a lot of self-discipline to follow what they have to say. They are, in their simplest form:
- Be impeccable with your word
- Don’t take anything personally
- Don’t make assumptions
- Always do your best
These agreements aren’t always easy to master, but it’s possible. When you backslide, don’t give up. Be aware of your mistake(s) and do your best!

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne
Whether or not you believe that your thoughts become things, the lessons within the pages of The Secret will help you start thinking more positively, which will help you begin living more positively.
Even if you integrate just the simplest steps into your life, like keeping a gratitude journal, you’ll reap many benefits from the pages of this book. Check out the documentary of the same name as well!
I have been living The Secret myself since 2010, and while my life isn’t always great I know that it’s my thoughts that attract the things I experience each and every day.
