Here are five such steps that you can take today to ensure a happier and healthier future.

Practice Regular Exercise

According to the Center for Disease Control, 300 minutes (or five hours) of physical activity will give an adult supreme health benefits. Depending on what you can tolerate does not matter, as long as you get out and put your body through some level of physical activity.

This can range from intensive workouts in the gym to brisk walks in the morning. Exercising regularly has a litany of benefits. Engaging in exercise helps ease stress and can fight against a litany of diseases, primarily that of the cardiovascular variety. Submitting to a sedentary lifestyle can not only lead to increased stress levels, but it can also lead to weight gain. That predisposes one to deteriorate health. Do your body a favor and give it workout every now and again. This will help your health in the long-term.

Keep in Touch with Friends and Family

Friends and family are incredibly important people in our lives. They are the ones who provide us with unconditional support and love. That proves to be important, especially for our mental health. Remaining socially connected, especially with the people closest to us will make us happier and healthier people. Studies have shown that those who remain socially active on a regular basis are less likely to contract Alzheimer's.

It has also been proven on numerous occasions that social interaction decreases stress and invokes positive feelings. While it can be important to spend time with yourself and learn to get comfortable with who you are, our best qualities are sometimes seen through others. Whether it is writing a letter, giving a phone call, or having a simple conversation, remain in touch with those nearest to you and you will be happier in the long-term.

Eat a Balanced Diet

If one seeks to live a happier, healthier life, a large part starts with what we put in our bodies. Whether this is an issue of weight or blood pressure, eating foods high in fat, sodium, and sugar on a regular basis will slowly damage the body's arteries and cause blood to flow less efficiently. This increases one's risk of getting a heart attack, cancer, stroke, and other adverse conditions.

It is recommended to incorporate foods that are low in all of these areas, and instead opt for foods that are healthy for you such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. While cravings and indulgence are accepted every now and again, it should not be a regular part of one's diet. If it does, you could spend time on a hospital bed instead of being with your loved ones.

Go on Vacation

You deserve a break sometimes, after all. The stresses of our daily responsibilities and work can get to us on occasion. Therefore, it is important to give yourself and your body time to refresh and restart. The best way to do this would be to give yourself a vacation. Vacations do not even have to be taken far away from your home. Staying within your vicinity or even doing productive things around the house may be all that one needs in order to fully realize their potential.

Practice Self-Care Exercises

These can be deep-breathing exercises, keeping a journal, or meditation. Engaging in self-care activities has benefits for your mental and physical health. When the world around you gets stressful, take care of yourself.
