Day 12 has arrived. It's like the twelve days of Christmas. Except there are no gifts from anyone else... and we still have eighteen days to go... Okay, it's nothing like the twelve days of Christmas. But I'm having fun with it! I hope y'all are too! The quote for today is: "Be courageous and try to write in a way that scares you a little."—Holly Gerth

DAY 12: WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY AND RELAXED?

This seems like a fairly easy question to answer. Reading. Reading makes me happy and relaxed. It doesn't matter if it's the middle of the afternoon and I've read the book eight thousand times before. There's just something about letting my mind wander into a world that isn't my own that's so relaxing. Sitting in my ugly day sweatpants, with milk and fudge striped cookies with my fuzzy blanket and socks that come up to my knees and a good book is my idea of a perfect, relaxing afternoon. I love the escape from reality. It truly is my most relaxing time of the day... or week. Depending on when I make time.

Or going for a hike. I used to hike all the time when I lived out near South Dakota. There was this one hiking trail I went on basically every other day. Just being outside, hot or cold, and taking in the environment around me. I love getting to the top of a large hill and being able to look over the landscape below. I think a huge part of it though was that there were no sounds to bother me. My phone didn't even work on the trails I used to take, so there were no calls or texts or Facebook pop-ups. It was just the sounds of the birds and bugs around me and the crunch of stones and sticks under my boots. I still go running almost everyday but it's not the same as being away from the noise of the streets.

Basically, I like to be cut off from most people. Those are really my relaxing moments. But I have happy moments that are kind of different than my relaxing moments. Like, I love going to car shows with my friends. I grew up around cars because of my dad and it's been a passion of mine ever since. Some of my happiest moments were spent at Chicagoland Speedway, which, when you're there for a NASCAR race... isn't exactly something someone would call relaxing. However, they're some of my favorite moments. I've met most of my best friends through car shows, drift events, or races. It's definitely a hobby that makes me happy and something I can't wait to share with my daughter as she gets older. Just like my dad did for me.

I think my relaxing moments and my happy moments aren't necessarily the same moments. I'm usually hyped up and running on adrenaline during my happy moments. Two great moments but not in the same category for me. Relaxing moments are usually spent alone, whereas my happiest moments have always been with other people.

My thoughts: I think this is a wonderful question. It really made me look at how much I miss a hobby that I have basically given up. It also made me look at how I define each of these moments. It made me realize that they are not necessarily the same thing, at least not for me. And it made me look at what things I make time to do when my schedule is full. I always make time for these things, even when it seems like I have no spare time at all. As far as self-discovery goes, I think this is a perfect question and really forces you to look at what things and moments are important to you.
