30 Journal Entries to Self Discovery - Day 11

What is the quality I admire most about myself?

Hey, Y'all! Hope everyone is having a good week so far! Happy Thursday! I'm excited about this question today and I hope you all are too. If you're writing along, be it in an online journal or your own personal notebook (I love actually writing things down) I hope you're getting inspired and self-discovering. The quote of the day: "I am writing a first draft and reminding myself that I am simply shoveling sand into a box so that later I can build castles." - Shannon Hale

DAY ELEVEN: WHAT IS THE QUALITY I ADMIRE MOST ABOUT MYSELF?

My immediate thought, when asked this question, is my hair. I have natural red hair and it took me forever to see it's beauty but I finally do and I love my hair. While that is an awesome thing to have, it's not really my favorite quality. Also, if I were to write about my hair, that would be it. I have natural red hair, I used to hate it and now I love it. The end.

But no, honestly, the real quality I admire most about myself is my ability to find the humor in almost everything. My sense of humor is slightly inappropriate at times, but it helps me get through a lot. I'm typically kind of an awkward person at first, but if I can find a way to make someone laugh, it really helps. It's also really helped me find out which of my friends and family take life a little too seriously.

My favorite part about my job right now is that I pretty much share the same sense of humor with everyone I work with. When something goes wrong at work, there are usually three of us cracking jokes about it. Most of the time, we usually have to step away from customers to make jokes because they really aren't "work appropriate."

It does slightly make certain relationships hard to manage. People who don't share the same sense of humor tend to find me offensive. I have also seen the humor in this and make a point to make inappropriate comments in front of them. It helps me weed out who will actually stay in my life and who I actually want to stay in my life. There's one guy I've been friends with forever and over the past few years we've hit some pretty extreme rough patches but every time we're actually together, we're vulgar and hilarious. It really is pretty much the only thing holding our odd friendship together.

I know certain people find my sense of humor offensive, however, they probably also don't know how much it has gotten me through. Without my humor, I don't think I would've ever come out of my depression. I was able to find the funny parts of personally suffering from epilepsy. Although, after a seizure, I don't have the greatest sense of humor, I usually find something to laugh about close after. Like making jokes about scars I left on myself during an episode.

I love my sense of humor. It protects me. It is definitely my favorite quality about myself. I'm fucking hilarious. Or offensive. Either way, I genuinely enjoy it and so do most of my close friends and relatives.

My thoughts: I think this is a great question. I really had to think hard about this question. It sincerely took me a while to realize what quality I admired most about myself. I had to step outside myself to see it. That is why I think it is a perfect self-discovery question. Any question that forces you to look at yourself from a different angle is, in fact, a question that should be included in self-discovery.
