25 & Adulting

Man, adulting is rough.

Here's the thing. You're in high school wondering what to do after graduation. They tell you to follow your dreams and life will be alright. Well, last night I had a dream that I was exploring abandoned houses and caves with a very handsome stranger who turned out to be my cousin. Let's not follow that dream.

There are so, so many possibilities for a good life! Thing is, companies like it when you pay their bills. I can wish all I want to already be a big-shot film director in Los Angeles, but wishing doesn't stop the phone company from yelling at me! Being an adult is hard. You're expected to behave a certain way, and when you don't, then you're looked down on by society. How is that fair after being told that being different or doing something differently is a good thing? An asset?

Why can't I just live my life as a dog from now on? I mean, eat, sleep, roll around in the mud, bite people. A dog's life is amazing! You don't have to worry about which bill is actually going to be paid this month, or if Debbie in HR's nephew is actually as good-looking as she says he is. (Stop trying to set me up, Debbie.)

Then there are those of us who struggle with mental illness. Boom! Adulting instantly becomes ten times harder. Not only do we have to deal with the general World of Being an Adult, we also have to deal with our own selves shutting us down. My brain tells me at least a hundred times a day to just give up. I tell it to shut up! I'm a busy woman. I have dreams to go after! I don't have time to listen to my brain whine about how I'm actually just totally worthless.

So what do I do? I sit in bed and down a whole tub of Vodka Key Lime ice cream.

All of that aside, being an adult is an adventure. It's very hard a lot of the time, and there are so many things to figure out! Half the time I don't even feel 25 because of how totally inexperienced I am. However, if I had to give anybody a tip on being an adult, this would be it: Stay Open to Everything.

Keep your mind and heart open to possibility, hope, healing. You don't know what's coming around the corner! Sure, it could be a creepy stalker or a ski-masked gunman, but it could also be a whole new idea that jump-starts your life towards something amazing. You are a rocketship. You can fly towards amazingness. Paint some spitfires on the side just for aesthetic's sake and zoom off! You got this, I got this, we're all going through struggles, so we may as well have some fun in the meantime!

Yes, adulting is rough. But it's even rougher if you live feeling scared of everything. Do yourself a favour and try something new. Put yourself out there and go crazy! Life won't wait for you.
