Being a 20-something can be tough; this is usually the point in your life where you need to “get your shit together,” as they say. You’re at the point where you just finished university or completed your apprenticeship. You probably have no money and if you went to university you also owe the government a ton of money. Having to deal with real life can quickly become overwhelming; however, do not despair! Here are 10 things you should know that will help you navigate through your 20's.
1. Time is on your side.
Although expectations to succeed may be high, the truth is, you’re only getting started. No matter what you start doing to earn money, it doesn’t mean you will be doing it for the rest of your life. Don’t be afraid to try out different things if the first job isn’t the one; this is the time where you can experiment until you find your calling.
2. Have a creative output.
Make sure you are doing something creative in your life. Whether that be playing an instrument, painting, writing, or photography, doesn’t matter. Having a creative hobby will get you through stressful times and allow you to decompress and forget about the world every once in a while.
3. Times have changed.
We live in the information age, and you can learn about anything and everything on the internet. Make the most of it; there are thousands of tutorials, articles, and documentaries that can help improve your skills and knowledge about what you’re interested in.
4. Offline still beats online.
In life, it’s the real moments that count, not the amount of likes your last Instagram post got. Social media sites are designed to get you to spend as much time as possible on the platform, which is why it’s so easy to get sucked into a lifestyle of retweets, Instagram stories, and endless Facebook scrolling. Unless you’re trying to become some sort of social media influencer, try and limit your time on these platforms as they can be big time wasters.
5. Be yourself.
Embrace who you are. Don’t try and live by other people’s standards and expectations of you. You may wish you were someone else every once in a while, but you will never find happiness trying to be someone else.
6. Be nice.
You will be surprised how far a nice and polite attitude can get you in life. Being mean never solves anything and you never know what the person who is challenging you could be going through. For all you know, it could be all be a prank that will end up on YouTube, so just approach every situation with a nice attitude. With karma on your side, things won’t go wrong.
7. Failing is OK.
Messing up is not the end of the world; everyone makes mistakes and you learn from them. Don’t be afraid to try something because you think it will be one big failure.
8. Keep in touch with your family.
Your family will always have your back; make sure to keep in touch with your parents and grandparents. You may become so preoccupied with sorting out your life that you can easily forget to keep contact. Remember they are older, wiser, and they won’t be around forever!
9. Exercise regularly and eat healthily.
Trust me, your body will thank you for keeping in shape when you reach the end of your 20’s. You will feel and look great doing it!
10. Be patient with love.
You can’t force it and it usually just happens out of the blue, so be patient; it will happen to you, too.
Keep these 10 things in mind next time you head out of the house and you will see that adulthood and responsibilities are actually not that hard to deal with after all. Also, last little tip, no matter what you're doing, make sure you're having fun doing it!
