Does Happiness Exist?

See the light in the darkness.

Throughout my whole life I have felt somewhat alone. I thought I was strange and incredibly different from what I assumed was normal. But from the help of social media, I began to feel more included, and as odd as that seems it was true for me and many others I assume. Social media was an escape for me but it brought me more exclusion in the long run. I regret the hours spent endlessly watching videos because I was missing out on real life experiences.

It is hard to reconnect with the world and overcome fears that you constantly carry with you, but finding an escape like I did does not fix anything. Everyday for some people is a constant fight for happiness. It is easy to give up on the day as soon as you open your eyes in the morning, but you need to find the strength to get up and conquer the day.

Happiness isn't something naturally given to you. You need to work at it like anything else in life and you will have your dark days when all you want to do is eat pizza and watch Netflix. This isn't a bad thing, just don't make it a reoccurring habit. I have before and I've felt like crap, but somehow I tried to justify my laziness, when the fact is the only person to blame is me.

I've constantly tried to search for key pointers to better my life but they are all so vague so here is my list. I hope this helps you in some way:

  1. Don't listen to the voice inside your head saying, "stay in bed" or "don't revise today" or even "I'll start my diet tomorrow." Overcome this voice and start anything right there and then don't wait until tomorrow. Do it now!
  2. Do anything and everything you enjoy. Listen to music, read a book, go on a walk or even write a blog, and make the most out of your life.
  3. Limit time on social media because you can easily get lost in updates and recent posts; withdraw from it. Even set a timer on your phone to limit yourself.
  4. Don't be to harsh on yourself; we all have our lazy/bad days.
  5. Start saying yes! (Recommend the Yes Man movie) Be more social and don't be afraid to integrate into new groups of people.
  6. Don't forget we are all human! Everyone trips and falls, makes mistakes, stutters, and fails tasks. The only thing that separates us is how we overcome these things. Don't allow yourself to get sad and down. Pull through and achieve your goals and enjoy everyday to the fullest.

Life is not easy, always remember that, and everything special takes hard work and dedication. I constantly need to remind myself this. I have always expected things to be easier for myself. I have realised that things that are easy to do are not truely worth it.

And to elaborate on point 1: I believe we all have that voice in our head that convinces us to make bad choices, and we will always have that voice; it is just finding the strength to block out that voice and push it down.

Another tip from me is to always have dreams and goals and never lose faith in them. Even though we all get led astray, try to realign with your goals.

Always remember to never be hard on yourself. You're human and mistakes happen and we make bad decisions. It is how you pull through the difficult times. Adding on to this, try to be more postive, even when all you want to be is pessimistic, and tell yourself to see the light in the darkness.
